What theory did Needham believe and how did he support it?

  • Needham believed in spontaneous generation. Spontaneous generation is the belief that life can form out of any object.
  • To support his theory, he heated a bottle of gravy. He claimed that the heat would kill any living things in the gravy. A few days later, he examined the gravy and found living things in it.

Needham's hypothesis and why it was wrong.

  • After his experiment, he still believed that living organisms could form out of anything.

What was Spallanzani's theory and how did he support it?

  • His hypothesis ended up being wrong, because he did not heat the gravy for long enough. Since he didn't heat it up for long enough, he did not kill all of the living things in it.
  • Spallanzani did not believe in spontaneous generation.

Needham and Spallanzani

  • He supported his theory by improving on Needham's experiment. He believed that Needham did not heat up the flask for long enough. Spallanzani heated up two tubes for one hour. After he heated them he sealed one and left the other open. Several days later, he saw that the open one had living organisms in it, but the sealed one had nothing in it.

What did Spallanzani do to improve Needham's experiment?

  • Spallanzani heated up the tubes for longer. He heated each tube for one hour.
  • He tested two different tubes. Instead of just testing one, he tested one with a sealed top and one with an open top.

Madison Grantham, Taylor Samford, and April Peak.

Why did people still persist in spontaneous generation?

  • There was no evidence to disprove it.

What was Spallanzani's hypothesis and what were the variables in it?

  • He did not believe that living organism's could be made out of anything.
  • The independent variable in his experiment was the gravy tube that he sealed.
  • The control variable was the gravy flask that was open.
