Physical Features

  • Vertebrates, bilaterally symmetrical
  • Length can be up to 0.5mm when fully grown
  • They have 6-8 stubby legs

What they have taught us about life in space.

Evolutionarily, water bears have become resistant to the effects of drying up, researchers are attempting to find other hardy life forms on Earth that may be used to develop techniques on safely living in space or other harsh environments

Environment

  • Though they can live in any habitat, they choose to live in mosses, lichens, and freshwater locations
  • They have been found in such varying locations as the Himalayas to the Marianas trench.
  • They can withstand pretty much any environment, but do not seek them out.

Tardigrades

Cryobiosis

  • Thought to be the toughest creature on Earth
  • They can survive in outer space unprotected
  • Tardigrade-"slow walker"
  • Also known as water bears or moss piglets
  • Are found in nearly every habitat on Earth
  • Survived all 5 mass extinctions on Earth

The reason tardigrades can survive such extreme conditions is the process called Cryobiosis wherein the animal can halt its metabolic processes. They can live like this for a decade and still be revived to its natural state.

  • Also called anhydrobiosis
