Social life

  • The Erasmus experience is less about studying and more about becoming a different person. You'll discover soon! :)
  • Living in another country is a challenge.
  • Remember even in the difficult moments that it is a great chance to be living somewhere different and to experience new things. So enjoy! :)
  • Approach other students in the beginning!! Don't be shy!
  • Having a good social life helps with homesickness and Erasmus is not only about studying anyway!
  • Possibility of having English friends and meeting other Erasmus students.
  • Being around English students/people is a great way of discovering England.
  • Comparing the different cultures is fun!

Language

  • Don't worry about speaking perfectly, the English don't do either and they love foreign accents!
  • Your English will improve quickly and that feels great! :)

Travelling

  • Erasmus life is also about discovering the country you are in.
  • Kent is a beautiful region of England.
  • So is Canterbury with its many cafés, pubs and parks.

Tips

  • Before you get to Canterbury get used to listening to English by watching series or films.
  • You can take a dictionary into the exams!!
  • The Academic English Service helps you with your essays.

  • nice bus journeys (cheap day rider tickets for the whole of Kent and East Sussex)
  • wonderful walks
  • London not far away and very cheap to get there by National Express
  • Don't miss out on the White Cliffs of Dover on a sunny day!

Uni

  • very friendly relationship with the lecturers
  • many societies and sports activities to engage in
  • exams spread over the year (not only at one point)
  • library very well equipped & good library catalogue
  • good food facilities and cafés
  • nice and green campus
  • many international students.

Tips

  • Look out for all the opportunities (e.g. bee-keeping, free piano use) and don't be afraid to engage as soon as possible!!
  • English people are more than happy to help. So if you have a problem just ask someone.
  • Try to choose modules with field trips or excursions because they will show you around and a good opportunity to meet people.
  • Use the Academic English Service and Academic Learning Development workshops.
