Environmental Science

Chapter 1: Understanding Our Environment

What is Environmental Science?

Sustainable Development

Means to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Indigenous people are generally among the poorest and most oppressed group. However, they often possess valuable ecological knowledge and biodiverse lands. Recognizing native rights is a good way to protect natural resources and environmental quality.

Native Peoples

Conservation History

Environmental Dilemmas

Four distinct stages of nature protection:

1) Pragmatic (or utilitarian) resource conservation

2) Moral or aesthetic nature preservation

3) Modern environmental ism

4) Global environmentalism

Water Shortages

Food production

Energy supplies

Effects of burning fossil fuels

Global climate change

Biodiversity losses

Human Dimensions of Environmental Science

  • Approximately 1/5 of world lives in extreme poverty, with an income of less than $1 per day
  • The world's poorest people are both victims and agents of environmental destruction
  • Another 1/5 of world lives in the 20 richest countries with income over $25k per year
  • Affluent lifestyles consume an inordinate share of the world's resources and a high proportion of pollution and waste

The systematic study of our environment and our proper place in it. It is interdisciplinary and mission oriented; integrating natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities in a holistic study of the world around us.
