- Earth half is called a hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere is the half to the north of the equator while the Southern Hemisphere is the bottom half.
- Lines of latitude are measured by degrees. The symbol ° stands for degrees.
- One degree of latitude stands for distance of about 112 kilometers. The equator is 0° latitude and there are 90 lines to the north of the equator and 90 lines to the south of the equator.
