Gangs/community Violence

Where is occurring in Canada?

It is occurring in everywhere in Canada but are main focus is Toronto.

-Some are looking for respect and power.

-Some gang members are addicted to drugs. The problem at home can become worse their parents don't know how to stop their addiction

-Some grow up in a neighborhood where it is almost a way of life. Some find a feeling of care and attention in a gang.

Who is it affecting and why?

Almost half of Canada youth gang members are 17 years old or younger girls/boys. This is happening because they have been bullied so they join a gang to be protected. Some are looking for respect and power.

What can you do to resolve this social justice problem? what specific actions can you take? How does this relate to you reflection on the catholic graduate expectations?

What is this social issue all about? Why is it important to us?

What is being done to aid this social issue? What specific initiatives (charities, organization, government aid etc.) that are in place to help this issue

Community violence: "the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation." - Violence Prevention Alliance website. With this being said, violence does occur anytime and anywhere. Violence occurs in a community, or person/ group. Our topic is ‘Gangs and Community violence’ this topic goes global. And Because so much young kids talk/influenced about this.Youth need to be inspired from real people that made it through- this and are starting a better, smarter path. But instead some kids strive to be a gang member- this happens because a lot of people influence them, especially around their area.

Solving the social problem of gang violence is not an easy task. Many youth today need a different and more respectful way of life. One of the most influential are of a child or young adults life is at schools. Providing more funding for schools specifically for anti-gang programs and giving them messages that are wrong and provide reasons why its wrong. In creating an atmosphere that does not promote violence.

This picture shows a gang former named the crips. They are one of the most violent gangs globally. they are known as wearing blue, and blue bandana's. Gangs usually wear a piece of clothing or they do hand signs so they can identify themselves and to other people.

This picture represents to me parents should be more strict because there wouldn't be as much gangs because they re child would already know the consequence of being in a gang

  • This picture represents to me is that one of the gang members might have not sold the drugs or product and they have to face the consequences.
  • They might beat up someone or kill depending on the situation.

This picture describes a gun pointing towards a little girl. the girl is trying to stop it from shooting.

  • Children are affected by it mostly because they may live in a area which is conflicted in violence.
  • If they ever experience a situation where they see/ or hear a person getting shot or stabbed, etc.
  • This may cause them to be traumatized- which can be a distraction from homework, school and even person interests, hobbies, etc. or communicating with others.
