Eminem's

Music

Although society thinks you can do everything better without drug use, it seems that it is easier for Eminem to make music while he is on them rather than when he is clean.

"At what cost to my health, personal relationships and self-respect, though?"

This is what Eminem must have had to ask himself while going through the drug addiction that nearly cost him his life.

Most do not consider prescription drug use as “abuse,” since it is legal to have and, with celebrity status, extremely easy to obtain. Many musicians and other celebrities use drugs for a variety of reasons including to help them sleep, get through a long day, or to inspire them.

Eminem used for all of those reasons. when he finally got clean, he realized the long-term consequences his drug use had caused him, affecting his music to this day.

Some prescription drug abusers get their medicine from friends and family members. Moreover, celebrities most often get theirs from doctors, which is how Eminem obtained his (Maxwell).

Instead of being safe, more people are actually killed by prescription drug overdoses than car accidents (Haiken). Eminem said it was hard for him to realize he was addicted to drugs, because it was not drugs like crack or heroin.

It turns out that prescription drugs are no less dangerous than the ones you were warned about all your life.

Eminem got to where he was taking 40-60 Valium and 20-30 Vicodin a day along with the Ambien. In his interview with Rolling Stone he stated, “I was taking so many pills that I wasn't even taking them to get high anymore. I was taking them to feel normal. Not that I didn't get high. I just had to take a ridiculous amount” (EElls).

The doctors told him he was 2 hours away from death, and if he had went to the hospital any later, he would have died. His kidneys, liver, and other organs were shutting down.

He missed

Christmas with

his kids because he

was still in the hospital.

In the documentary “How to Make Money Selling Drugs”, Eminem opened up about his scary drug use, and admitted he almost died because of it.

“I was in a really dark place. I felt like it was over for me ... professionally," Eminem says.

"I felt like I had a really bad case of writer's block. ... Music is so therapeutic for me that if I can't get it out, I start feeling bad about myself — a lot of self-loathing. I was in active addiction. I knew I couldn't control it anymore” (Mathers).

He was walking around the house thinking he was going to die, and he was looking at his kids thinking "I need to be here for them." Eminem stated to Eells, “As a father, I want to be there for things. I don’t want to miss anything else”.

He knew he had to make the decision to get help or he was going to die. That is when he made the change.

In Eminem’s interview with Eells, he stated, “I came out of some difficult things these past couple of years. I kind of feel like I'm just now finding my footing. So I want to make sure that's secure before I go out and do anything else. I need to keep working on myself for a while”.

In 2010, Eminem released the album Recovery. It is the fastest selling solo album in history and was his 6th consecutive #1 album. His hit single “Not Afraid” has a positive message for people trying to overcome obstacles.

He is the first person with four songs in the top 20 on the top 100 billboard since the Beatles in 1964.

It is hard to believe he was so good while he was on drugs, and now that he is clean, it is not even a good comparison to his old days. Society believes you can do anything better off drugs, but for Eminem maybe it is not the case.

He mentions it is harder for him to concentrate while he is clean, and he is not as good at rhyming and making music.

When he was on drugs in the early 2000’s, his self-respect was very low, he was not seeing his kids much and not paying attention to anything. not to mention that he was near death.

The pills

he took wiped

out about five years

of his life. He has

little memory of that time.

Eminem is committed to being there for his kids and not missing anything else important in their lives. Nowadays, he even enjoys helping with their homework.

His lyrics originally were funny, silly even, now they have more emotion and aggression.

Although is it a matter of an opinion of how good music is, Eminem believes himself that his music is not what it used to be, and he does not have the same touch as he did when he was abusing drugs.

Even without that “touch”, Eminem is still better than most.

His music

touches people in

different ways and

continues to do so

to this day.

...Is it Better or Worse Without drugs?

Recovery

The Turning Point

After rehab, he had to regain his motor and talking skills, and learn how to rap and rhyme while he was clean, because every time he was recording he was high.

Eminem checked himself out of the hospital after a week, even though he was not fully detoxed. Within a month, he had relapsed and had ramped his drug use right back up.

Eminem said, “One day somebody gave me an Ambien, and it knocked me the fuck out. I was like, "I need this all the time." So I got a prescription. After four or five months, your tolerance starts building. You start breaking off another piece of the pill that's supposed to be for tomorrow” (Eells).

Lose Yourself

The overdose

Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” was recorded during the 8 Mile era when he was on drugs. “Lose Yourself” is his highest ranked song that he has ever made.

In December 2007, Eminem overdosed and almost died. When he woke up in the hospital he did not realize what had happened.

Its Personal ...

It all started ...

Although Eminem made better music while he was under the influence, no one can argue that after he became clean it really improved his personal life.

Eminem's drug addition started to become a problem when he was filming the movie 8 Mile. He was working 16 hours on the set, and he had very little time to sleep.

Good Music, Good Life

Legal, but safe?

His music might not be as good as it used to be, but he has improved a lot as a person and as a father. Eminem has been clean for a couple of years and he still makes good music.

Prescription drugs are thought to be safe since they are often prescribed by doctors and are legal.
