Chapter 14: Visual & Multimedia Arguments

Question to the Class:

What is the most powerful image you've ever seen and why was it so powerful and/or memorable?

  • Some images are so powerful they remain in your memory
  • Whether we realize it or not, images are constantly influencing us.

Visual arguments = always powerful

  • Images compete for our attention, time and money.
  • The purpose of these visual and multimedia arguments is to persuade and coerce us into believing something

What is this image trying to persuade the viewer to do?

There are 5 key components to visual/multimedia arguments:

1. Creators and distributors- who created the visual and who distributed the visual and what were their intentions

2. The medium used for the visual- what media did the creator use and what roles do text/images play within the argument

3. The viewers and readers it hopes to reach- in order to achieve this the creator must consider their assumptions on the viewers, the impression it will leave on the viewers and feelings that will be evoked within the viewers

4. Content and purpose- purpose of the text and what argument it is designed to convey, the creator also wants to evoke values and emotions from the viewer

5. Design- What is the viewer drawn to? Consider color, sound and font used.

-Also check to see if any information is omitted, exaggerated or repeated.

Using visuals and multimedia creates arguments in multiple ways.

  • Using visuals and multimedia triggers emotions in order to get a response (ie: ASPCA ads on TV)
  • Careful use of images can help establish the character and credibility of your text as well as your ethos as a writer
  • Images create a sense of who you are (ie: Facebook profile pictures)
