Direct/Indirect Characterization

-OKONKWO IS AN INDIRECT CHARACTER WHOM HAS VIEWS BASED ON HIS UPBRINGING BY HIS FATHER. OKONKWO SPEAKS AS IF HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS AND KNOWS HIS PLACE IN LIFE. PEOPLE JUDGE HIM AFTER HIS TWO KILLINGS AND HIS CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR WHICH EVENTUALLY COMES DOWN TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY HAVING TO LEAVE.

Style of Narration

Static/Dynamic Character

Throughout the story, the author had several different styles of narration such as tone and mood. An example would be the tone of the death of Ikemefuna, the priestess taking Ezinma, or when Okonkwo gets banished. The stories tone changed dramatically to fit each of the particular events. The events made the mood different also because the reader felt compassionate towards the characters.

OKONKWO IS DYNAMIC BECAUSE HE IS THROWN OUT OF HIS VILLAGE WITH ALL OF HIS FAMILY AFTER HE PERFORMS EXTREME, UNACCEPTABLE ACTIONS, SINCE HE KILLED TWO MEMBERS OF THE VILLAGE, ONE BEING A DEAD VILLAGE LEADERS CHILD.

How your group used three critical thinking standards:we used logic, significance, and releveance.

How Culture Is Used To Survive

How Protagonist Uses Culture To Adapt/Change

•Okonkwo has a very strong attitude against things that of the ways of his father (ex. Laziness)

•He values his crops just like the rest of the villagers because they provide food, money, and status to him.

•After a baby dies ceremonies are held; objects are often exchanged

•Stories and tales are told to children to provide morals within the culture as they develop

•Okonkwo believes in strong family bonds, that men should provide for their families as tradition, and that weakness is a sin.

•He has shaped himself in many ways to fit in this culture.

•Adapted when he and his family had to flee to the motherland after being told to leave by the village.

•His best friend and wives influence him and have a great impact on his persistence to keep going when the going gets rough (dominance& power) this goes along with the theme

Logic

Relevance

Significance

We used this thinking standard to show how relevant it was when something big occurred in the story. When Ikemefuna is killed, it is relevant that his father did not stand up for his son even though they were not blood, and still killed him.

We decided that it was logical to say that Okonkwo was not as bad of a parent as the book displayed it because all he wanted was for his family to be successful and strong.

We used significance to show the death of Okonkwo. Him dying helped the people of Umuofia to realize what kind of power he held and how noble he was. They then realized that there were some true warriors in the village of Umuofia and that he died for all of them.
