Gas

  • gas particles are well separated with no regular arrangement
  • gas particles vibrate
  • they move freely at high speeds
  • lots of free space between particles

States of Matter

A State of Matter is one of the most distinct forms that different phases of matter take on. Three states of matter that are observable in everday life are; gas, liquid, and solid. Plasma is also known as a State of Matter.

Liquid

  • liquid particles are close together with no regular arrangement
  • liquid particles vibrate
  • liquid particles move about
  • liquid particles slide past each other
  • not easily compressible
  • referred to as a condensed phase

Compounds

A compound is a substance whose smallest particles include more than one element chemically bonded together. Just about everything in your kitchen and everything you eat is a compound. Compounds have a unique and defined chemical structure, they consist of a fixed ratio of atoms that are held together in a defined spatial arrangement by chemical bonds.

Compounds

Solid

  • solid particles are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern
  • solid particles vibrate
  • they generally do not move from place to place
  • referred to as a condensed phase
  • rigid - particles locked into place

Examples of Compounds

H2O (water) : A compound of hydrogen and oxygen atoms boded together.

Salt : A compound of sodium and chlorine.

Sugar : A compound of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

Baking Soda : A compound of sodium, hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen.

Structure of Atoms

An atom is composed of of three tiny subatomic particles known as; protons, electrons and, neutrons. The Protons have a positive charge, the Electrons have a negative charge and, the Neutrons have zero charge though they do add mass. The nucleus of an atom is made up of both Protons and Neutrons. While the Electrons are located in what is called an Electron Cloud.
