Wheel of Theodorus

Data Collection

Standards

This Project is an opportunity to be creative and use the mathematical ideas learned from the unit covering the Pythagorean Theorem.

8.1 & 8.2

MA.8.8.G.6 - [Standard] - Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse.

MA.8.8.G.7 - [Standard] - Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

MA.8.8.G.8 - [Standard] - Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system.

Project

“The Wheel of Theodorus begins with a triangle with legs one unit long and winds

around counterclockwise. Each triangle is drawn using the hypotenuse of the

previous triangle as one leg and a segment one unit long as the other leg. To make

The Wheel of Theodorus, you only need to know how to draw right angles and

segments one unit long”.

Standard 8.1 Educational Technology

ALL STUDENTS WILL USE DIGITAL TOOLS TO ACCESS, MANAGE, EVALUATE, AND SYNTHESIZE

INFORMATION IN ORDER TO SOLVE PROBLEMS INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLABORATIVELY TO CREATE

AND COMMUNICATE KNOWLEDGE.

8.1.8.A.2 Plan and create a simple database, define fields, input data and

produce a report using sort and query.

8.1.8.E.1 Gather and analyze findings to produce a possible solution for a

content-related or real world problem using data collection

technology.
