As a kid Theodore had to sell things he found on the street or take any job he could find and get to earn money, but when he got older it all changed.
His first real writing job was in 1934, when Ted was 13. He wrote the local High School's Sports column in a Newspaper in Virginia.
At the age of 17 Theodore moved out of his parents house in Virginia, this is when his 'real' life as an adult started. He had a job that he loved in the Newspaper company and earned enough money to survive!
When Taylor was about 33 he decided he wanted to write books, and so he did. His first book,'A magnificent mitscher' , was released in 1955.
Ted attended the local school's in Statesville, and then later in Virginia.
He did not get into college because his grades were to low. This is why he started writing for a Washington DC. Newspaper, and later said that: "these newspapers I worked for were to be my college and my graduate school."
Theodore has written more than 50 books for all ages, countless of short stories, a few poems and even some movie scripts.
Mr. Taylor's first book was called 'A magnificent Mitscher' it was published in 1945. It takes place under World War ll, which Theodore was a part of.
Probably his most famous and well-known book is called 'The Cay'. This is a story about a young white racist boy, who shipwreck's on the same island as a 'black' older man.

As Theodore (Ted) grew up, he had a really hard time. Life was tough for Theodore as a kid. For about 6 years, his dad was out of town searching for a job. So Ted had to help out the family.
His days were long. As a nine year-old he woke up at 4:30 AM everyday to WALK to a hotel, pick up and deliver around 60 newspapers before 7 AM. Because by then he had to be home, eat breakfast and leave for school. In addition to this he sold candy and junk metal...
When his dad finally found work in Virginia, the whole family moved there, a lot was about to happen to Theodore.
But he could never have guessed that he was going to be a writer...
