Punishment Explained:
Punishment involves the person being wrapped up in a flame of fire and unable to speak properly. The flame resembles the burn they caused others, while their inability to speak serves as their punishment for leading others astray.
The eighth circle is known as Malebolge, which means evil ditches. Ditches are also refferred to as Bowges which is why its called Bowge 8: Counselors. Bowge 8 contains sinners on pillars of fire and evil counselors, who are people who force other people to cause sins or bad deeds. In this scene Dante recognizes the masterminds behind the Trojan Horse, Ulysses and Diomede.

The snakes biting and strangling the hands of the thieves resembles the loss of their greatest tool for thievery, (their hands). Since thieves made people lose their substance in life, they lose their identity each time they resurrect in a different form.
Punishment Explained
This scene opens up with Virgil and Dante moving down a rocky bank, where Dante becomes exhausted and only with the encouragement from Virgil does he proceed. Dante then realizes a valley filled with serpents that are strangling and biting men. The men are bitten and turn to ash, but only for a second, until they resurrect like a "phoenix." However, when they resurrect, the do not always come back in human form. Dante describes one who came back to life as a lizard and attacked another thieve causing him to dissolve into ashes. Dante recognizes Vanni Fucci, a man he calls a man of "Blood and Anger." Vanni Fucci admits to stealing holy objects from a Church. Fucci then proceeds to curse God which results in another snake strangling him and biting him.

Here the sinners turn on each other like animals and eat each other like cannibals, tearing at the throat. By tearing at the throat, falsifiers can no longer lead people on.
The scene begins with a depressed Dante, who is sullen from moving through hell. He only continues moving when Virgil convinces him to pull himself together. In Bowge 10, Dante sees Myrrah, Potiphar's Wife, Granni Schicch, and Adam of Brescia tearing at each other with their teeth .
