Silver D of E Expedition:

25th - 27th May 2013

By Tom Ward, James Callon,

Abbie Hayles and Holly Wildeman

Our project was to compare the different species of wildlife found around water compared to that of a town or village.

In order to complete this we looked for and took photographs of local wildlife.

The Practice

Date: 4th - 6th May 2013

Location: White Peak Area

Start: Onecote

Campsite 1: Hulme End

Campsite 2: Haddon Grove Farm

Finish: Winster

Distance: 45km approx.

Our Practice aimed to prepare us for the Expedition. This was mainly to make sure we had the correct amounts of kit and food with us.

Day 1 was supposedly the shortest day. However it took us all afternoon and made us realize we needed to speed up for the rest of the weekend.

And James found a friend!

Day 2 took us mainly along the Tissington trail, which made the walking a lot easier.

Day 3 was again quite a short day but we were all very tired by this point which made it seem much harder.

The Expedition

Date: 25th - 27th May 2013

Location: White Peak area

Start: Just outside Leek

Campsite 1: Upper Hulme

Campsite 2: Cold Springs Farm

Finish: Cat and Fiddle Pub

Distance: 60km approx.

Day 1 took us around Leek and up to Tittesworth reservoir. This took us most of the day and we didn't finish until half past 6.

Day 2 was similar in length to day one, taking us north to the campsite which was just outside Buxton. The walking was more challenging when we got onto the moors in the afternoon.

Day 3 was shorter but that meant we could spend time focusing on our project. However there was one big hill at the end which ended up being the steepest we'd done all weekend.

Project: Wildlife in a town or village

We found out that in a rural town the plant life that is not private property is mainly weeds but by the lakeside there is much more diversity. The most common weed was that of the dandelion. But then there was also the grass.

There wasn’t much wildlife to be seen either as the town was quite busy with cars going through. However one thing we did spot was a pigeon resting its wings whilst on a town hall.

Project: Wildlife by a lake

Plant life at the lake was of course much more diverse, this may be due to the higher amount of surrounding water on the lake side. We also saw geese,(unfortunately we weren’t quick enough to photograph them) and ducks. We also found signs of even more varieties of bird like the nest.

There was a huge variety of lichen around too because of the varying water level.

Conclusion

So overall the lake had a lot more diverse and quantities of wildlife than the rural town.
