Causes of the Cold War

"It would be wrong to think that the Second World War broke out accidentally... As a matter of fact, the war broke out as the inevitable result... of capitalists with [less] raw materials and markets usually attempt[ing] to change the situation and to redistribute "spheres of influence" in its own favor-by employing armed force. As a result of this, the capitalist world is split into two hostile camps, and war breaks out between them. Perhaps catastrophic wars could be avoided [was it not for Capitalism]... "

-excerpt from Josef Stalin's Election Speech Feb 9, 1946

Ideological

The West (U.S.) and the Soviet Union

West-U.S.: capitalism, individualism and personal rights

East: The Soviet Union, communism, control over everyday life, control over the economy, seen as trying to take over the world with communism

Spheres of Influence

Sphere of influence: A powerful nation taking control of another nations politics, military and economy

Eastern Europe during the Cold War was a Soviet sphere of influence.

The U.S. wanted to contain the Soviets spheres of influence while the Soviet Union wanted to expand its influence over other nations.

Military Factors

Huge military buildup between the United States and the Soviet Union.

After World War II neither side ever disarmed.

Each time one side made an advancement in military technology, the other side did the same.
