Treatments

Cyclothymic Disorder

Symptoms:

  • at least 2 years as an adult (or at least 1 year as a child/teenager) of several periods of hypomania symptoms and mild depressive symptoms

  • Borderline personality disorder- pattern of relationships with others that is unstable and chaotic; Patient will complain of feeling empty and will have “attachment difficulties”; Usually experienced trauma, such as childhood adversity
  • Unipolar depression- bipolar patients are commonly misdiagnosed with this; Persistent depression and lack of interest in all activities
  • Impulse control disorder- trouble controlling emotions and behaviors
  • Post traumatic stress disorder- someone has difficulty recovering from past events

Best to get treatment from a psychiatrist

Even though bipolar disorder never goes away, treatment is used to help manage symptoms

Medications- used to immediately balance moods

  • Mood stabilizers- controls manic or hypomanic episodes
  • Antipsychotics- if symptoms of hypomania/mania continue even after other medications
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-anxiety medication- helps anxiety and improves sleep but only works short-term
  • Antidepressant-antipsychotic- works as a depression treatment and mood stabilizer

Treatment should be continued and should last life-long

  • Day treatment programs- recommended by doctors, provide support and counseling
  • If you have prior substance abuse problems, you have to get that treated as well because that will seriously affect the extent of the disorder
  • Hospitalization- a doctor will recommend this if a patient feels suicidal or psychotic, this will calm the patient and keep them stable

  • Affects 5.7 million Americans over 18 (2.6% of the population)
  • Median age of onset is 25
  • Results in an average of 9.2 years in reduction of life span
  • One in five patients with bipolar disorder commit suicide
  • 20% of adolescents with depression may actually be experiencing the early onset of bipolar disorder
