Tundra & Desert Differences

Climates

How Do Ecosystems Differ In Their Features?

Temperature in the desert can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius in the day and almost 0 degrees Celsius at night. They have less than 250 mm of rainfall per year, and most deserts north and south of the equator range between 20 and 35 degrees Celsius. Tundras are one of Earth's coldest and harshest biomes. Tundras have an average temperature between -12 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius. This goes for all type of tundra.

Ecosystems are different because they house different habitats for different animals. For example, a tundra can't grow many trees as it is prevented by low temperatures, but the area is covered by shrubs, sedges, grass, mosses and lichen. There are 3 types of tundra: Arctic, Antarctic and Alpine. Deserts are biomes made of sand and is barely covered with any trees and bushes. These do grow, but the main plant that grows in the desert is cacti. Deserts and tundras are found worldwide.

Animals living in the tundra include the Polar Bear, Caribou, Arctic Fox, Arctic Hare, Snowy Owl, Musk Ox and the Rock Ptarmigan. Each of these animals live in different tundra biomes. Animals living in the desert are the Roadrunner, Ostrich, Meerkat, Caracal, Texas-Horned Lizard, Black Widow Spider, Bark Scorpion and the Sonoran Desert Toad, only to name a few! Each of these animals have adapted to their habitats by changing the way their body functions to fit the environment around them.

Flora

Plants that grow in deserts are mainly cacti and tumbleweed, but other shrubs and lichens also grow. Plants in the tundra include the Bearberry, Arctic Moss, Caribou Moss, Diamond Leaf Willow, Labrador Tea, Pasque Flower, and the Tufted Saxifrage.
