Part of the Compromise of 1850 the Fugitive Slave Act makes the punishment for fugitive slaves greater by making the federal government responsible for the apprehension and return of all escaped slaves, and facilitates the job for slave catchers, as well as denying the slaves a jury trial.

People across the nation and the world flock to California in hopes of striking rich, some are successful, often in ways not originally planned, while most are not. This however solidifies both California and the territory.

Gag Rule Repealed

Pennsylvania Congressman David Wilmot suggests slavery be banned in all new territory acquired from Mexico. He is unsuccessful.

The U.S. Supreme Court rules (7 to 2) that slavery is protected by the Constitution, and a ban would be unconstitutional.
