Nike's big statement

The first basketball shoe

Chuck Taylor Converse

Nike entered the market and made its statement during the 1980’s. Not much technology was added, but their designs and the materials used caused the players to favor these shoes. Soon after, Nike made a contract with the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan. Jordan named his own brand the Air Jordan. His shoes are still considered the most iconic shoes of all time. The Air Jordans featured leather-based materials and rubber soles at first, but developed fuse models and air max units as the series advanced.

Although the game of basketball was created in 1891, the first official basketball shoe was made in 1917 by Converse. Basketball star Chuck Taylor loaned his name to the company and contributed greatly in the growth of the shoe market. They were made with canvas with rubber soles.

The future

Reebok & Adidas

Innovations and improvements

In the 1990’s Reebok became the new big market along with the jordans, and by the late 1990’s, Adidas had made signature models for famous players such as Kobe Bryant and sought for success. By then, most sneakers featured authentic leather materials and better cushioning technologies such as foams and zoom air.

Coming into the 2000’s, several companies such as Nike and Adidas came up with a new idea; the low top shoes. This innovative idea attracted many players and is still popular in the current basketball shoe market. Nowadays, basketball shoes are now one of the most developed shoes up to date in technology.

Basketball has been around for only a century, which is a relatively short time compared to other major sports. However, its popularity grew rapidly and along with the growth of basketball, the basketball sneakers industry also found its place in many global markets. Basketball sneakers are not only a big part of basketball itself but also a big part of the international fashion market and industry. Advancements in the sports science and manufacturing technologies led to improvements in both the quality and the design of basketball shoes.
