4. The Iron curtain speech by winston churchill

This speech marked the start to the cold war. This speech was given on march 5, 1946 (world war two ended in august of 1945). according to churchill, the iron curtain is a hypothetical line that divides communist and democratic countries of the world. Everything behind this curtain is a 'soviet sphere'. he (churchill) also stated back in world war two that we cannot appease an agressor- and he ended up being right. He gives this speech in order for us to listen to his advice this time around for we can prevent what happened beforehand. He predicts that another world war will occur if we do not take action. this speech held a great deal of caution and nervousness. this is important to the cold war in full because this speech started the cold war. this speech was a first warning sign for americans.

3. "Duck and Cover" Film

The duck and cover film was created by the Federal Civil Defense Administration. This was administration was created to educated the public on how to respond to a nuclear attack on the United States. This film was created in 1951. This film respresents the fear of nuclear attack on the United States from Russia in this era. It is obvious that ducking under a desk and covering your head will not save you from a nuclear bomb but this was created to give the people a sense of hope. Instead of being frantic and in panic, the people would be ducking and covering and would be in a less panic-like state. This film was made for children and it respresented their day to day lives in that time period with also having multiole drills to prepare. In a modern day person's eyes. this would seem ridiculous but to them it gave them a chance and hope to survive. This film also showed how freaked out people were about how easily this could happen. And it also showed how realistic this was in that era and the danger.

1. SPUTNIK

Artifacts of The Cold War

The sputnik 1 marked the begining of the Space race during the cold war. Sputnik was successfully launched by Russia in 1957. The space race with sputnik respresents the great tension and competion of the United States and Soviet russia in the time of the cold war. The united states was fearful of this achievement of the russians because of the fear of other advancements such as the capability to launch missiles and so on. this also led them to jump to the conclusion of the russians being ahead in the arms race as well. This respresentation of technological power from the ussr, also showed the new gained advantage to gear closer and closer to economic and political ties with third world nations in places such as africa and asia. the sputnik is a good artifact from this era because of the symbolism of our fight against communism. it shows the lengths both sides of the coin were going through to either gain power (ussr) and to try and contain and abolish it (usa). the space race was one of the many important conflicts during the cold war era.

2. The Crucible By Arthur Miller

The Crucible is a book that was created in the time frame of the Cold War. In context, the book is just about the Salem Witch Trials and how innocent people were killed but there is a deeper meaning to this book. The Crucible is a respresentation of the McCarthyism era during the Cold War. Senator McCarthy made a speech stating that he had a list of soviet spies in the United States. This brought America to a great paranoia and led to almost a second Red Scare. He made this lie to gain support and in order to gain political prestige and power. He soon was caught in his lie when he had a televised trial of higher ups in the army and the veiwers soon realized he was a fraud. The Crucible outlines this whole situation throughout the book as Abigail being McCarthy. This book helps respresent this time period in the sense that it gives the reader the feel for that era in a symbolic form.
