Harlow's Experiment

Contact Comfort

Harry Harlow and his wife Margaret conducted an experiment to test which type of child attachment would be strongest. Would it be their biological needs or physical comfort?

Contact Comfort- The stimulation and reassurance derived from the physical touch of a caregiver.

In psychology, contact comfort refers to the comfort an infant receives from being in physical contact with its mother. The contact gives physical and emotional comfort.

Monkeys

Experiment

Harlow's experiment confirmed his previous hypothesis. Even though the monkeys need nourishment, they spent most of their time with the "comforting" mother. The experiment showed that love can be proven through science and that monkeys prefer a "mother" figure with contact comfort. One that can give them a feeling of safety.

Example

Hospitals

Harry Harlow tested infant monkeys who were taken at birth from their mothers, instead of human infants. The monkeys who were taken were then put into separate cages. Each cage had access to two surrogate mothers. One mother was made of wire and could feed the infant milk. The other was covered in terry cloth, but did not feed the infant monkey.

An example of Contact Comfort would be the reaction of a crying baby, when its mother picks it up. The baby will stop crying and begin to relax. It is believed that this close contact with its mother gives a feeling of security and safety.

Even hospitals use a type of contact comfort. They keep specific schedules for babies, so that they can be comforted and held. This helps development.
