Pyromania and Kleptomania

Pyromania

A mental disorder where a person (usually child or teenager) has the impulse to start a fire

Reasons for Pyromania

  • Antisocial behaviors and attitudes.
  • Adolescent fire setters have often committed other crimes, including forcible rape, nonviolent sexual offenses and vandalism of property making up to nearly fifty percent.
  • Sensation seeking. Some youths are just pyros and are atracted to big fires.
  • Attention seeking. Fire setting becomes a way for the teen to find attention from adults.
  • Lack of social skills. Many youths arrested for fire setting are loners and have little friends

Treatment for Pyromania

A patient usually has triggers to set them off to start fires, so the psychiatrist can find what those triggers are and find a new release instead of setting fires.

Case of Pyromania

Teenager Andy first started setting his fires to just small brush. Progressively the fires got worse where Andy called the fire department. He was praised for warnings of fires in the area. Then the fire department thought that maybe Andy was the one starting the fires because some of the fires were far from where he lived and he seemingly knew about them. Andy was excited though because the fire chief said whoever started the fires was really talented. Andy though did not go to seek help untill he was caught starting a fire and arrested for arson.

Kleptomania

Disorder where a person has an overwhelming urge to steal something by shoplifting or from houses of friends or family.

Reasons People have Kleptomania

People usually do this because they lost something else in their life and have a desire to replace it or they might steal because they have been clinically depressed. People who are wealthy are just as likely to steal as someone who isn't.

Treatment of Kleptomania

Examples in Celebrities

Lindsay Lohan stole a necklace from a jewelery store and a watch april of 2010 the watch costed over 24k this stealing frenzy or kleptomania is most likely due to the overcoming of her drug addiction and she is merely replacing the sensation of drugs with the sensation of stealing.

The patient will take either fluoxetine or naltrexone antidepressant medications that can help the overwhelming urge to decrease. Also Kleptomania is triggered just like pyromania and can be stopped through an alternate safe release.

Treatment may also include psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and rational emotive therapy
