After India’s independence, during the period of late 1940s to the 1960s is considered to be the golden age of the Hindi cinema by many film historians. Some of the most critically acclaimed Hindi films of all time were produced during this period. Some of the examples include Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955) and Aan (1952).

Although Bollywood is not a real place, there are lots of studios and locations where films can be shot. An example being Film City.

Bollywood is the name for the Hindi Cinema. Bollywood is one of the largest film producers in India and one of the largest centres of film production in the world. The name ‘Bollywood’ comes from the words Bombay (former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood. Bollywood is the world’s largest film producer.

EARLY HISTORIC MOVIES

Raja Harishchandra, by Dadasaheb Phalke was made in 1913 and is known to be the first silent feature film made in India. The first Indian sound film was Alam Ara by Ardeshir Iran in 1931. It was a major commercial success. In 1937, the first colour movie was made by Ardeshir Irani, Kisan Kanya. The next year, he made another colour film, a version of Mother India.

START OF BOLLYWOOD

  • In 1896, it was the Lumiere Brothers who introduced the art of cinema to India. Bombay, as it was then called, was the first Indian city to screen Cinematography. A portrait photographer called Harischandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar who made the first ‘Indian motion’ film. His short ‘reality’ film screened in 1899 was called The Wrestlers and was a simple recording of a local wrestling match.
