Resistance In A Toaster

By: Emma Sorrell

How It's Used

The toaster uses resistance because there's a heating element in the toaster and it's commonly a thick nichrome wire.

The glowing red colour inside the toaster are the nichrome wires. They turn that colour when they get really hot.

Using Resistance

Not all of the energy can transfer down the wire, therefore the electricity turns into heat instead meaning the wires get very hot. When you put the bread in, if it's close to the heating element long enough, it turns a light brown colour and turns into toast.

Nichrome Wires vs. Copper Wires

Nichrome wires aren't able to deliver electricity as well as copper wires can. Because nichrome wires are alot thinner than copper wires, they tend to get hot very fast and easily.
