Oxfam Goat Aid

This family have been helped by Oxfam Goat Aid.

Advantages

Comparison

Who runs it?

"I am earning four times what I used to"

Some advantages are:

  • selling milk, cheese, fur etc that the goat has produced can help raise finance to improve the communities quality of life
  • children can be taught how to care for an animal and learn respect from a young age
  • if the goats breed the kids can be sold
  • it can improve people's quality of life
  • brings villagers together looking after a goat
  • manure can be used as fertilisers
  • goats breed easily which makes it sustainable

NGOs run goat aid, such as Oxfam and Christian Aid. This type of aid is multilateral because it is not government to government like bilateral it is lots of people donating money into Oxfam which is then taken out and used to buy goats.

The large scale NT2 Dam Project and the smaller scale Oxfam Goat Aid project are both good but have some disadvantages.

The NT2 project is good in the long term because it will work for a very long time and will pay back itself and produce lots of electricity for Lao and its surrounding countries. However in the short term it is not suitable because Thailand and Lao already have surplus electricity so isn't needed. It does create jobs but people living in Lao aren't very well educated so these jobs don't suit these people, which are very intellectual jobs. It is bad for the environment because the dam causes flooding which ruins farmland and farmers aren't able to use the land anymore. Also lots of animal species die out because their habitats have been destroyed in the making of the NT2 dam.

Oxfam Goat Aid is good in the short term but even more in the long term. This is because it gives people in LEDCs almost immediate resources which the goat will keep producing, such as milk, fur and goat kids. However it is very expensive to look after the goats and give them, food, shelter, health care when they are already struggling to look after themselves and don't have much money at all to buy these things. It is good because the goat owners can sell produce and sell baby goats of they decode to breed them this produces money for families which can really help them to improve their quality of life.

Disadvantages

The project

“I can buy food and my children never go to bed hungry like before.”

Some disadvantages are:

  • the goats need shelter, and poor families cannot afford this
  • the goats need food and water which some families may not afford
  • transporting the goat to Africa could be expensive and difficult
  • veterinary care would be expensive
  • the family would need to be taught how to care for the goat properly

This project helps people in LEDCs by giving them a goat, which will then produce dairy products, meat, fertilizers, fur and breed to produce baby goats which can then be sold to earn money. It works by people donating £25 for Oxfam to buy a goat to be sent to LEDCs to help the people. This project is just in Africa but other NGOs work in other areas.

In my opinion I think that the Goat Aid product is more appropriate and better than the NT2 Dam project because it helps lots of people in LEDCs and benefits whole communities greatly. It also does not cause any harm to the environment, which makes it very sustainable.

Sustainability

Facts and Figures

  • 38000 goats have been bought for this project in the last 4 years
  • the goats are donated to over 20 countries in Africa
  • oxfam works to find lasting solutions to poverty around the world, they try to think of long term ideas which are sustainable

Sustainability is meeting the needs of people today without ruining resources for use of future generations.

This project is very sustainable because goats will reproduce for as long as they live so if one goat dies then in its life it could have had little goats, so the source of goats will not run out for a very long time. The goats meet the needs of the people today, for food and produce etc but it isn't damaging resources for generations in the future.
