Fun Facts

Penguins

-The various sizes of the penguins help them contain body heat and their little tail prevents them from losing the body heat

-The claws on their feet give them a grip on the snow and ice so they don't slip and slide and the fur/feathers on the penguins body allows them to glide across the ice on their stomach

-The strong structure of the skeleton allows them to swim faster

-The sharp beaks make it easier to catch small and large fish...sometimes the beaks are curve which allow them to catch a fish on a harder angle

-An ice sheet covers about 2.4 percent of Antarctica's 14 million square kilometers

-Only invertebrate animals live on the continent year-round

-70 percent of the Earths fresh water is a part of Antarctica

-90 percent of the fresh water is ice

-the ice is very thick...about 1 mile long (1.6 KILOMETERS)

-underneath all of the ice is an entire lake full of fresh water. Its 2.5 miles under the ice

-Bird feathers keep them warm and they can fly down to catch food and bring it back up to their nest away from other hungry predators

-Seals can stay under water and stay on land so they can carry their pray out of the water...most seals are big so they have an advantage

-The killer whale is basically the ruler or the antarctic waters due to its massive size and speed..it can eat what it wants when it wants

It may be hard to believe but Antarctica actually has many different species other the penguins...These are the following species that adapted to the cold weather in Antarctica.

-Emperor Penguins/King Penguin

-Adelie Penguin

-Chinstrap Penguin

-Gentoo Penguin

-Southern Fur Seals

-Crabeater Seal

-Leopard Seal

-Weddell Seals

-Southern Elephant Seal

-Whale Species (Killer Whales)

-Krill

-Wandering Albatross

-Snow Petrel

-Antarctic Skua

Plants

You'll be surprised that there are plants in such a cold place...Plants grow in Antarctica in ice-free regions (only about 2 percent of the continent is ice-free). Lichens and moss grow in any favorable niche, including in sand, soil, rock and on the weathered bones and feathers of dead animals. Algae also grows in Antarctica.

CLIMATE

Antarctica is know as the coldest place in the world.

The lowest record temperature in Antarctica was -89.2 C

The average temperature in Antarctica is very cold and it may be hard to breath
