Jessamyn West

Jessamyn was from North Vernon, Jennings County, IN. She attended Oxford University in England and received her doctorate degree. West was an author and has taught many writer's conferences including one at the University of Notre Dame.

Jane Pauley

Gene Stratton-Porter

Jane was born in Indianapolis, IN. She was a TV newscaster that replaced Barbara Walters on the "Today" show in 1976. She also invented the term "bad hair day".

Gene was from Largo, Wabash County, IN. She was a best-selling novelist, gifted wildlife photographer and environmetalist even before it existed. She has published 12 novels, 7 nature studies, 3 books of poetry, childrens books and many magazines articles.

Frances Slocum

Frances grew up near Peru, IN where she was adopted by Indians and raised as their own. She met up with her family nearly 60 years later because a trader that she told her story to wrote to the Lancaster Penn postmaster hoping to find her family.

Wilma Rudolph

Sandi Patty

Wilma was a track and field athlete. In 1960, Wilma became the first American woman to win 3 gold medals at a single Olympic game. She later became a coach in Indiana and moved bakc t Indianapolis with her children.

Sandi was born in Oklahoma, but lived most of her life in Anderson, IN. She is one of the most honored vocalists in contemporary Christian music and has won five Grammy Awards.

Madame Walker was born to ex-slaves on a cotton plantation in Louisana. She suffered from alopecia (hair loss, baldness). so she developed a line of hair care products and started selling it door-to-door. She moved to Indianapolis where she set up a manufacturing facility. She was the first African American woman to become millionare.

Born in Gary,IN, Janet was the youngest child in her family. She became a singer, songwriter, actor, dancer, and producer and was named one of the best selling artists in history of contemporary music.

Shelley Long

Sarah Parke Morrison

Shelly was born in Fort Wayne, IN. She was an Emmy award winning actress and was on Cheers. She was also Carol Brady in The Brady Bunch: The Movie.

From Salem, IN, Sarah was the first female to attend Indiana University in 1867. She was also the first female to complete her four year degree in two years. Lastly, she was the first female faculty member at IU.
