Welcome Back, Devon

What did the bullies do to Devon?

Why do you think the bullies chose to pick on Devon specifically?

How did some of the students who were interviewed say they avoided bullies?

How did Devon try to avoid the bullies?

One of the students said he was bullied by the "popular kids." Why would those who have the advantage of being popular want to bully others?

The show mentioned fear of retaliation. What is retaliation and why are people afraid of it?

What did the bullies finally do to Devon? How did they plan to get away with it?

Did they get away with it? Why not? What happened to the boys?

Some people think that hurting those smaller and weaker shows strength and superiority. Does it? What does?

Types of Power:

  • Physical (you can be bigger or stronger)
  • Social (you can be more popular)
  • Aesthetic(you can be more physically attractive)
  • Economic (you can have more money/ better clothes/ stuff etc.)
  • Academic (you can be smarter or more successful)
  • Age (if all else fails, pick on someone younger)

I Can Help By:

  • Not spreading rumors
  • Refusing to join in when someone is being bullied
  • Asking an adult to help
  • Creating a distraction to draw attention away from the bullying
  • Being kind to the victim
  • Speaking up when I see someone being bullied

No-Bullying Pledge

HOLES IN THE FENCE

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper.

His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, her must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.

Over the next few weeks as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same.

"When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like each of these holes. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say 'I'm sorry,' the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one."
