Marcotting

Benefits of Marcotting

- Rooting success is more ensured through layering , including clones which will not root easily.

- It is relatively simple to perform ,with a small number of plants, it can produce more layers with less skill, effort and equipment.

- Larger plants which are readily mature can be produced in faster time

= Wrapping the air layer - The medium should be well moistened. Fibrous material should be thoroughly wetted and squeezed free from excess water at the moment of application.

=Transference of the rooted air layer - When the marcot has rooted sufficiently to ensure successful transplantation, the procedure of separation should begin.

Materials to be used

(1) 4X 3 INCHES PLASTIC CELLOPHANE

(2) ADHESIVE TAPE

SCISSORS

SHARP KNIFE CUTTER

COMPOST SOIL

What is Marcotting

Factors to consider

= Age of Shoots - Firm shoots sufficiently lignified to withstand the necessary manipulation, yet young enough to respond to treatment, should be selected.

=Rooting Medium - The choice of the rooting medium should be considered. A good medium should be open in structure to permit air and moisture movement and be able to retain its structure throughout the rooting process.

Marcotting it also called as air layering, an asexual or vegetative method of plant propagation, can be easily performed with less skill. Air layering is just slightly different from other methods of layering such as tip layering , simple layering, compound layering etc. In all these methods ,the induction of roots development is usually done by wounding the part of the plant be rooted.
