Victorian literature was often about the struggles of the working life and love. Most stories allowed the protagonist to be rewarded and the antagonists punished, often with a moral at the heart of the tale. This changed as time progressed however.
Throughout the 19th century, several European and Asian empires collapsed. This allowed Britain and its empire to have growing influence upon the rest of world.
Art - Impressionist. Art tried to capture emotion and ambience rather than accuracy:

Music - Romantic era, still elements of classical from the previous era:
Beethoven, Grieg, Chopin, Wagner, Tchaikovsky.
Fashion - Dignity and smartness. Men tended to wear black/grey suits, whereas women wore large dresses and corsets. Usually as little skin
possible would be shown.
