Working classes
The Industrial Revolution employed millions across the country, as did it move people from their own jobs. Those who worked in agriculture were moved into the industrial factory businesses.
Self-employed artists and potters couldn't compete with the higher production rates and cheaper prices of factories.
The increase in workers lead to a decrease in individual wages, as so many people worked for the same institutions.

Most children went to school and learnt between the ages of four and nine. Some children went to Sunday schools and Church schools, but the majority worked in factories. They were usually
16 or under.
Victorian literature was often about the struggles of the working life and love. Most stories allowed the protagonist to be rewarded and the antagonists punished, often with a moral at the heart of the tale. This changed as time progressed however.
19th Century
Throughout the 19th century, several European and Asian empires collapsed. This allowed Britain and its empire to have growing influence upon the rest of world.
Influences of the 19th Century
Art - Impressionist. Art tried to capture emotion and ambience rather than accuracy:
Van Gogh, Monet, Edvard Munch.
Music - Romantic era, still elements of classical from the previous era:
Beethoven, Grieg, Chopin, Wagner, Tchaikovsky.
Fashion - Dignity and smartness. Men tended to wear black/grey suits, whereas women wore large dresses and corsets. Usually as little skin
possible would be shown.
What happened in 19th century?
- Electricity was created/discovered
- Production of the London Underground began
- The Daily Mail was first published, influencing language via media
Fizzing - Very good, excellent.
Hobbadehoy - A youth who refuses to be called a boy, but isn't considered a man.
Cupboard love - One would pretend to love someone in order for them to make them a meal.
Admiral of the Red - A person whose red face indicates they really like alcohol
