By: Chrystal Mitchell

Professional Conduct with Clients

According to the "ICF Code of Ethics" (2008) the standard states "I will not become sexually intimate with any of my current clients or sponsors"

Professional Conduct at Large

According to the "ICF Code of Ethics" (2008) the standard states "I will accurately identify my coaching qualifications, expertise, experience, certifications and ICF Credentials".

How does it relate to teacher- based coaching?

Coaches should be honest about their qualifications and experience to prove he or she is capable of coaching teachers. Coaches should be able to "walk the talk" (Dubrin 2005). If a coach says they have qualifications or holds credentials, they should demonstrate this by being an effective coach for teachers.

How does it relate to teacher-based coaching?

Getting sexually involved with teachers or students can cause a coach to lose his or her job. It can also cause trust issues and change the dynamics of the relationship (Dubrin, 2005). This is because the inappropriate behavior was not expected from the coach or teacher. Individuals can become unfocused and create conflicts with others.

Confidentiality/ Privacy

According to the "ICF Code of Ethics" (2008) the standard states "When acting as a trainer of student coaches, I will clarify confidentiality policies with the students".

Conflicts of Interest

According to the "ICF Code of Ethics" (2008) the standard states "I will not knowingly take any personal or monetary advantage or benefit of the coach-client relationship except by form of compensation as agreed in the agreement or contract".

How does it relate to teacher based coaching?

Teachers want to build relationships with their students. Students must trust that the information being shared with their teacher is private (Dubrin, 2005). It is important for coaches to train their students to keep information private. If information is disclosed, it should pertain to the students safety or it is required by law to report. Also when coaching a teacher, the teacher should feel confident that their coach is keeping their information private. This will help them progress, keep them from being embarrassed, and help improve their teaching skills.

How does it relate to teacher-based coaching?

Coaches and educators are expected to uphold responsibilities stated in a signed contract. They receive a salary for performing these tasks. Coaches should help teachers willingly if asked. Coaches should treat all teachers equally and not provide more help to someone that is paying them. This could make individuals feel uncomfortable or dis-liked. If a coach is paid additional money outside of the signed contract, he or she could risk losing their job.

Thank You!

Conclusion

These standards are important when mentoring and coaching individuals. Keeping these standards in mind while coaching can help individuals to become effective teachers.
