My Passage

"Retreat!" Caliban hissed over his shoulder. "Come on, Silverwing, you've done all you can!"

Suddenly Ishmael was beside him. "Are you going?" Ishmael said.

"No."

"Me neither. I won't leave my brother again.

This passage relates to the characters and the plot because it shows that Shade and Ishmael are very brave and caring because they don't want to leave Ariel, Marina or his brother. Shade and Ishmael are very nice because they don't just want to save their family, but also the other bats, rats, and owls.

SUNWING

Book Title :

Kenneth Oppel

Author :

Reminds Me of...

August 12th, 1999

Publishing date :

This book reminds me of a book that is called "The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West". This book reminds me of "Sunwing" because they both have talking animals in the book. However, "Sunwing" has talking bats and "The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West" has talking horses. Also, both books have the main characters (the main characters in "The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West" are : Duchess, Susie, and El Arat, however, the main characters in "Sunwing" are : Shade, Marina, and Chinook) try to defeat something that is evil. Another reason why this book reminds me of "Sunwing" is because in both books, the main characters try to save the others from dying. However, in "The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West", The main characters save the others of their own kind from extinction, but in "Sunwing", the main characters save their own kind, owls and rats from dying. These two books that I just talked about are very similar but they are also very different.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The author of this book is Kenneth Oppel. He was born on August 31st in 1867 in Port Alberni in Vancouver Island, British Columbia. At the age of twelve, he realized that he wanted to be a writer, however, this was not his first choice for a career. First he wanted to be a scientist, then an architect, and then a writer. As a kid, he went through a lot of phases, but when he was in his video game phase, he started to write a story. One of Kenneth Oppel's family friends knew his favourite author (Roald Dahl) and showed him Kenneth's story. Roald Dahl loved his book and wanted Kenneth Oppel to sell it. As a kid, he would have to write small stories for school but then he started doing them on his own time. This is what made him realize that he wanted to become a writer. Kenneth Oppel has written a lot of books and some of which are : Silvrwing, Sunwing, Firewing, Darkwing, The Dark Endeavor, Such Wicked Intent, Half Brother, and Airborn. He is currently living in Toronto with his wife and their three children who are very loving, kind, and thoughtful.

SUMMARY

RECOMMENDATION

This book, "Sunwing", is the sequel to the book "Silverwing". This whole book is basically about a bat named Shade who just finished a very long journey trying to find Hibernaculum (his colonies hibernation place) with a friend that he met along the way. Her name is Marina. Even though she is a Brightwing bat, Shade's colony welcomed her when they arrived. In this book, Shade, his colony, and Marina were starting a new journey to find Shade's father, Cassiel. One of the bats in Shade's colony said that Cassiel was going to a Human building, but Cassiel never returned. Their journey was to go to the Human building and find Shade's father. They went inside the Human building and it seemed like paradise. But was it really? Bats were being taken away and he couldn't find his father. Where did they go? Who or what was taking them? Then they went on another journey. They went to the Southern Jungle, also known as Goth's homeland. Shade battles some unfamiliar animals and gains allies. Shade and his allies have to try to defeat Goth so he doesn't take the sun away forever.

Sunwing is a very good book for all ages. It is a fantasy and an adventure book. This book would be good for children because it has a lot of fun and exciting scenes and it teaches them what bats do and how they live. It is very educational. It also would be a good book for teenagers/adults because there are a lot of action scenes. For example, when Shade has to try and defeat Goth from taking away the sun forever. It is an adventurous book for all ages and it keeps you wanting more. It is very suspenseful and once you start reading it, you can't put the book down. However, I think that this book would appeal to children from ages 8-15.
