These fruits are most commonly known as the Dragon fruit but fruit is actually called a Pitaya. By the chinese, they are known as either the ”fire dragon fruit” or the “dragon pearl fruit”.
The vietnamese meaning for it is “green dragon” and the Thai meaning for it is ‘dragon crystal”. Other names for this fruit also includes strawberry pear, cactus fruit, Belle of the night and Cinderella plant.
When it comes in the form of a flower they refer to it as “moonflower” or “lady in the night” because they only bloom at night.
The dragon fruit has a very dramatic appearance
It can be white, magenta, bright pink, dark red or yellow skinned. The yellow skinned dragon fruit has green coloured spine-like scales, these scales turn yellow.
