Some might say it's a waste of a drive to the Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands. Others might say you'd be crazy not to visit Ontario's northern region. Canada's cottage country is waiting, like they say, Ontario, 'yours to discover.'

Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands

How did the region form?

What is our landform region?

Our landform region is the

The Hudson Bay lowlands were formed by the retreating glaciers of the ice age. Once covered by continental glaciers as they moved away it crushed the land into the flat plain it is today. The ocean waters later flooded up to 300 kilometers inland from the coastline. During the retreat of the massive continental ice sheets, drainage into Hudson Bay was blocked and lakes were formed from the water that could not escape seven thousand years ago. The land around the Hudson Bay region is slowly being eaten away by the James and Hudson Bay.

Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands

Where is our landform region located?

what are the features of your landform?

Permafrost underlies much of the region, resulting in landforms such as patterned ground, string bogs and mounds of frozen peat. When the water melts the land has permafrost and ice, which cause very poor drainage and form pools of water.

The region is a plain that slopes toward the sea at a gradient of less than a meter per kilometer. 85 percent of the region is muskeg or peat-forming wetlands. Also, 50 percent of the surface is covered by water which has a correlation with the ground being so cold.

The landscape is dotted with many areas of water and swampy terrain. This is caused by the flat plains of the Hudson Bay lowlands.

The Hudson Bay lowlands, are located between the Canadian Shield and southern shores of the Hudson, and James Bay. Most of the Hudson Bay lowland area is in the province of Ontario, with smaller parts reaching into Manitoba and Quebec.

As you can see here, The Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands are located in the middle of the Hudson Bay and the Canadian Shield. This region could be classified as Ontario's northern section but it shows in the diagrams that this region expands further than just Ontario.

The Lowlands is like a playground for red necks; in a way. The Lowlands have multiple areas of water and swamps which contain ‘living treasures’ for hunters and outdoors men. Activities in these areas include Fishing, Hunting, Boating, Canoeing, Kayaking, etc. All activities including hunting animals will be found in the H.B.A.L( Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands). Recreational activities could possibly include swimming, snow-mobiling, skating and possibly, cross-country skiing. Any, Winter activity/sport will be most likely found in this region.

Hunting, Swimming, Skiing, you name it. These Lowlands contain miles of fun and excitement that might draw you in to pay a visit to Canada’s cottage country.

The Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands mostly consist of flat plains containing wetlands and flowing rivers. Wetlands stretch out across this vast region and cover up to 85% of the region! There is no mountains or steep cliffs in this region but The Lowlands have long gentle slopes to long, flat plains. Some areas are like a cold dessert, while others are extremely swampy and inhabitable.

These Lowlands are an example of how some area’s of Canada do not have civilization but have been discovered. This is because of the type of landform regions and the resources that The Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands contain. This piece of Canada is vast and extremely deserted, but this leads to the human activity found in The Lowlands. The less people, the more animals. Thus, leaving sports and activities to be enjoyed in these Lowlands.
