Mae Jemison

Conclusion

Like many people, Mae Jemison worked hard to reach her goal, but she is a hero because she helped so many others along the way to her dream. And like a true hero, she continues to help others everyday.

Meadal/Awards

in 1988 she received the Essence Science and Technology Award, and in 1990 she received Gamma Sigma Gamma Woman of the Year.

Contribution

She is the first African American female astronaut. In 1992, she flew into space aboard the Endeavour, becoming the first African-American woman in space.

Childhood/Education

Mae Jemison's parents were supportive and encouraging of her talents and abilities, and she spent a considerable amount of time in her school library reading about all aspects of science, especially astronomy. During her time at Morgan Park High School, she became convinced she wanted to have a career in biomedical engineering, and when she graduated in 1973 as a honor student, she went to Stanford University on a National Achievement Scholarship.
