Act 4 Scene 1 Quotes Analysis

King: "Should have kept short, restrained and out of haunt, this mad young man." (4.1.19-20)

King Claudius says he will be the one who will be blamed for Hamlet's actions. This is significant because he knows in his mind he is the reason that Hamlet has gone crazy. However all others are not aware except him and Hamlet. Cladius was the one who killed King Hamlet, and as a result of Hamlet finding out he goes crazy. He claims that his love prevented him from stopping Hamlet. In reality he just doesn't want people knowing why Hamlet has gone mad.

Act 4 Scene 2 Summary

Act 4 Scene 1 Quote Analysis

Hamlet is in a room in the castle, when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern appear.

The two ask Hamlet where the body of Polonius is, so they can take it to the chapel.

He calls them a sponge, soaking up the rewards of the king.

They say again that they need the location of the body.

He says that the body is with the king, and that the king is a thing.

He then asks them to bring him (being Hamlet) to the king.

King: "Friends both, go join you with some further aid. Hamlet in maddness hath Polonious slain, and from his mother's closet hath he dragged him. Go seek him out, speak fair, and bring the body to the into the chapel. I pray you, haste in this." (4.1.34-38)

Claudius sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to find Hamlet and retrieve the body and bring it to the chapel. Claudius does not know that Hamlet already aware that they are sent by the king. Even if they speak nicely, he will not be appreciative of them coming. He doesn't have trust in them since they spy on him through the king.

Act 4 Scene 1 Quote Analysis

King: "But we will ship him hence, and this vile deed." (Line 31)

King Claudius and the Queen wish to send Hamlet away to England. They want to send him there so they can explain to others what has happened. With Hamlet gone there is no way he can have a say in the matter.

Act 4 Scene 1 Analysis

"Queen: "To draw apart the body he hath killed. Over whom his very madness, like some ore among a mineral of metals base, showitself pure. He weeps for what he has done." (4.1.25-28)

Because Hamlet took the body away, it shows that there is some morality in his madness. She feels that Hamlet is upset with himself for what he has done. It is surprising when she says "he weeps for what he has done" because despite the fact that Hamlet killed someone she is still showing compassion for him.

Act 4 Scene 2 Quotes

Act 4 Scene 1 Summary

Hamlet: "A knavish speech sleeps in a foolish ear." (4.2.22)

Hamlet is taunting Rosencrantz, calling him a fool for not understanding his sly words. He is glad that the two do not understand what he means when he refers to them as "sponges."

Scene 1:

  • Gertrude
  • King Claudius

Scene 2:

Hamlet

Rosencrantz

Guildenstern

Hamlet: "That I can keep your counsel and not mine own. Besides, to be demanded of a sponge! What replication should be made by the son of a king?

Rosencrantz: "Take you me for a sponge my lord?"

Hamlet: Ay, sir, that soaks up the King's countenance, his rewards, his authorities. But such officers do the King best service in the end: he keeps them, like an ape in the corner of his jaws - first mouthed,to be last swallowed. When he needs what you have gleaned, it is but squeezing you and, sponge, you shall be dry again.

(4.2.11-21)

Hamlet compares Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to sponges, because they have asked where Hamlet hid Polonius' body. They are being used by the King against Hamlet.
