  • Book Illustration

Book illustration is a form of fine art that is used to create drawn pictures and images for books.

Illustrations are meant to be much more than pretty pictures, however. They will usually help add to or enhance the story in some way.

Generally speaking, illustrations are more commonly found in children’s books. Some children’s books may consist of nothing but pictures, although many children’s books also have words as well. Not only do these pictures add visual appeal for a child, but they can also help a child understand the words of the story as well. As a child becomes more adept at reading and understanding stories, they will typically begin reading stories with fewer illustrations.

Illustrations are also commonly found in some books for adults as well. Instructional books, for instance, often contain a number of diagrams and charts, which help readers see each step of a particular process. Medical and health books, along with wildlife and nature books, also usually have a number of illustrations as well.

  • Digital Media

All the artistic skills and techniques that go into producing books like those just presented, of course have their counterpart in the ever-growing world of digital media. This means that books that were originally available only in print are being gradually converted to digital format, while new books are now conceptualized, written, designed, and illustrated precisely for these online media.

This also means that the manner by which today’s readers can find, access, and enjoy these electronic books (or ‘ebooks’) is via digital media tablets, ebook readers, and other handheld reading devices. One such device that is available locally is the ebook reader called Kobo, which features international as well as Philippine titles.

Likewise gaining in popularity are social media-based publishing sites, like Wattpad, that serve as communities for millions of budding writers to share their original stories online. This phenomenon, along with the rise of electronic distribution

platforms, such as Flipreads, which provide access to the works of Filipino authors and publishers, is also opening up exciting new opportunities for young artists to do the digital design and illustrations for all these upcoming titles.

Book design is usually typographic design, since most books consist almost completely of type. Learning typography takes time, practice and familiarity with the tools of design.

People have expectations about what books should look like, and going against those expectations can cost you in legibility, readability and, eventually, in readership.

Book design includes two quite different disciplines that are in some ways complete opposites. Cover design wants to attract attention, shock, surprise, act as a poster or advertisement. Interior design wants to be invisible, allowing the author to communicate with the reader without interruption.

The aim throughout the design process is ease of comprehension—using the tools of typography to present the author’s work with clarity at every level.

The elements of book design are almost entirely typographic. Body type, display type, page layout, chapter openings, 2-page spreads. Even illustrations, charts, graphs, photos, icons, sidebars, and tabular material are usually composed of, or joined to, typographic elements.

Formatting deals with how parts, chapters, heads, subheads, lists, pull quotes and all the other elements of the book are organized to serve the reader as they navigate the text. The formats the author has used in the book help to define the book’s infrastructure. Nonfiction books particularly are concerned with format questions, and the most important thing for authors to remember is that the hierarchy of information needs to be clear to the reader, and the book needs to be consistent from beginning to end.
