Cholera

What sort of pathogenic organism

causes cholera?

Cholera is caused by a bacterium

called Vibrio Cholerae. This bacterium

travels to the small intestine where

it mutiplies. It then releases a toxin

which causes severe, watery diarrhea.

How is cholera transmitted?

In an epidemic the disease is usually passed through sewerage and drinking water that has not been treated correctly, causing it to spread quite quickly. The transmission of cholera through contact with an infected person is very rare. In order to develop cholera symptoms, a significant amount of V. cholerae would have to be ingested.

How do people become infected?

People become infected when they consume water or food that is contaminated with V. cholerae. The water and food can become contaminated naturally or by contaminated faeces. The cholera bacterium can live in saltwater rivers and coastal waters. Eating raw or undercooked shellfish from these waters can cause cholera.

What are the symptoms?

There are quite a few syptoms associated with cholera:

-Sudden watery diarrhea

-Extreme thirst

-Lack of urine

-Neusea adn vomiting

-Abdominal cramps

-Feeling lethargic

-Dry mouth and skin

-Quick heart rate

-Sunken eyes and lack of tears

-Rapid loss of body fluids causing dehydration

In severe cases shock, kidney failure, coma and even death can occur within hours.

How can cholera be treated?

Because cholera causes dehydration, the main treatment is

to replace the fluids and salts that have been lost as a result

of the diarrhea. If the cholera is in it's early stages there is a

simple home remedy that involves sugar salt and water.

Are there any economical or social issues

associated with cholera?

There are undeveloped countries that are infeted with cholera, most of the time, these countries do not have access to treatment. Epidemics of cholera around the world, especilly in third world countries, have caused thousands of deaths.
