- people became more interested in celebrity gossip and pop culture after seeing a visual aspect to their music

- Denim was extremely popular (many styles such as bleaching and dying)
- society loved branding

- Men's clothing was snug fitting, matching sweatpants and sweatpants were popular (active wear)
- Athletic shoes became a fashion symbol following the popular air Jordans in the late 1980s

MTV and its Impact in the 80s
- People started caring about the looks of the artist just as much as the music
- MTV developed artists to be more capable of dancing, singing and filming MVs (being a all around performer)
- MTV was the beginning of Music videos, which is a common media form nowadays
- replaced the radio in terms of accessing music, ironically, the first music video launched was called video killed the radio star"
- MTV introduced a corporate and marketing dimension to the world of rock'n'roll
Pop icon: Madonna
- In the early 80s there was crisis in the music industry: bc of the increase in people recording albums, or radio tracks on to cassette, ppl were not buying records
- Thus, MTV was launched to Market music, stimulate consumer sales in records, and create awareness for the artist
- Launched in 1981 with the Mv for 1981: “ Video killed the radio star” by The Buggles
- at the beginning, songs were used to enhance a film but MTV made it so that the visual element was used to enhance the song,
- Madonna's pop tunes uses a catchy melody with trendy sounds and rhythms and skillful production
- simple and catchy melodies in her music somewhat resembles a child's song
- Her single “Open Your Heart” (1987)became her 10th straight top-five single, the longest series of top-five hits since The Beatles
- her success adds a new dimension to gender equality between men and women
- Her popularity is set by her great ability to gain attention, and a great ability to turn controversy into publicity
- Her flashy and memorable outfits set numerous fashion trends in the 80s

The End Of Hair metal
- early 80s fashion was extremely similar to 70s fashion
- a lot of browns, tans, oranges and blocky shapes
- velour and velvet was trendy
- Women mainly only wore neutral colors and scarfs
- in the mid 80s, pop stars such as Madonna and Cyndi Lauper started different fashion trends with their MVS
- wore a lot of neon makeup, hoop earrings, bangles, sunglasses, teased hair
- this style was extremely popular to a younger audience
- bc of the popularity, lesser talented hair metal bands started to rise
- Hair metal slowly transitioned to the rise of grunge music in the 1990s
- popular band such as nirvana took up the music scene in the early 90s
- many native hair metal bands disbanded/went on hiatus during this time

- significant artists: Duran Duran, Blondie, Billy Idol, the Talking Heads, and Culture Club.
History of New Wave
- The King of Pop: Michael Jackson
- 1982 release of album "Thriller" sold 42 million copies and stayed at number 1 for 21 weeks
- video for Thriller in 1982 helped increase his popularity dramatically
- Michael Jackson used MTV to promote his music, making music videos a art form.
- he altered MTV's color (race) barrier with his album Thriller in 1982, being a hit
- Thriller shows the use of electronic instruments in 80s pop as all sustained harmonies behind the vocals are played by synthesizers
- many believed that no previous pop icon performed with his expression and virtuosity
- Sony created the Walkman in 1979 which made it easy to listen to music in headphones with a cassette
- cassettes were extremely popular bc it made music sound good (quality wise) and was easy to carry around
- music industry launched campaign “home Taping is Killing the music”
- People were able to record songs they heard on the radio and put it on their cassette tape to listen for free
- One of the first portable music listening devices, similar to the MP3/I pod of the current generation.

Hair/Glam metal
- The Genre began in the 1970s and was popular until the mid 1980s
- during the late 1970s punk artists that refused to go mainstream started a genre called “No wave”
- After the 1970s, punk music became divided into post punk and new wave
- post punk was challenging and arty whereas new wave was pure and simple
- new wave died down in 1984 when established artists changed genres and others started targeting college and underground audiences
- The 80s started the outbreak of synthpop which uses electronic instruments such as keyboards and synths.
- Influenced artists such as Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Joy Division
- digital synth took over analog synth
- Many new recording technologies: MIDI and the birth of digital recording
- MIDI provided a way to allow different pieces of musical technology (such as synthesisers and drum machines) to communicate and synchronise with each other
- Hair metal music has Big hooks, melodic choruses, and a signature "monster ballad"
- the use of guitars are very prominent and the music usually includes guitar solos
- The signature look of hair metal bands include teased, "big" hair and makeup
- their culture was deemed a negative influence on young people due to the heavy partying and controversial outfits
- popular artists: Motley crue, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard

Live Aid Concert
- Before the concert, a charity single called "do they know it's Christmas was recorded by numerous hit artist at the time such as Duran Duran, U2, and Culture Club
- Do they know it's Christmas was a No 1 hit in USA and the UK, raising a total of $44 million
- The Live Aid concert featured 75 acts including Elton John, Madonna, The Who, Bob Dylan, U2
- Crowd of 70,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London and 100,000 viewers at Philadelphia's JFK stadium.
- Thirteen satellites beamed a live television broadcast of the event to more than one billion viewers in 110 countries
80s Recessions impact on the Punk Movement
Early Influences and rise of Glam/Hair metal
- Originally, new wave was a term used to call punk music that emerged from the 70s
- The public had a stigma that these punk bands were bad influences as they were violent and unruly.Thus, they were unmarketable by music companies.
- At the same time, numerous radio friendly bands such as the police, and Elvis Costello and the Attractions, whose music had the same message and energy emerged, creating a line of artist under the term " New Wave"
- eventually became tied to pop music bc the MVs were promoted on MTV which also lead to popularity
- during the late 70s and 80s, recessions began to occur in the UK and USA.
- Numerous punk bands were angry with the government for their lack of actions towards lower class families to help them out of economic deprivation.
- thus heavily influenced the rebellious sound of punk bands in the late 1970s and 1980s (bands such as Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash)
- Frustrated and rebellious youth followed the punk movement and agreed with their viewpoints, leading to the rise in popularity for this genre and it's culture
- Influenced by glam rock from the 1970s
- Hair metal bands were popularized on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles beginning in the early '80s.
- Sunset Strip was a popular street for night life and clubbing in the 1980s
- Bands such as the New York Dolls, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, Sweet and Van Halen are Direct influences of Hair metal die to their trashy glam aesthetics and attitude driven protopunk

1980: John Lennon gets shot and Dies outside the Beatles apartment
1988:
- CDS outsell Vinyls for the first time in history
-Mick Jagger takes off his first tour as a solo artist
- Beginning in 1984, Ethiopia experienced a famine that killed nearly 1 million people
- this was because the country relied on agriculture/farming to feed its people, and for three consecutive years, the country experienced a major drought
- During the time of the famine, the Ethiopian country was also fighting a civil war, distracting the government from this issue.
- In 1985, the UK and USA held a concert to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia

-Madonna held AIDS benefit concert on July 13
1985: concerts in London and Philadelphia were held to relieve starving children in Ethiopia (Live aid)
