Drawbacks

  • The pump could only lift water to a height of 6 meters
  • To lift the water higher, the steam would have to be under more pressure
  • The boiler could not create that amount of pressure without exploding
  • Very inefficient because most of the energy was wasted heating up the water

How it works?

History

In 1698, Thomas Savery created the first steam-powered pump. Savery decided to create this pump because the British mines needed to be cleared of water. The savery engine is quoted by Savery as an "engine to raise water by fire."
