  • footprints belonging to ANNA
  • blood droplets
  • hair particles

  • a syringe

Internal Examination

Cause of Death

Urinary System:

Inflammation of the urinary tract, including the urethra, bladder, and ureters. Kidney damage consistent with the beginnings of organ failure

Cause of death cont.

Before her death, Anna was recently admitted to the hospital for a sickle cell crisis. She reported fatigue and extreme pain in her extremities. During her hospital stay, the pain in Anna's leg was so bad that she was confined to her bed and required a urinary catheter to empty her bladder. One day, Anna started noticing strange urinary symptoms. She was feeling a persistent urge to urinate, and then when she would urinate, only a very small amount of urine would come out. After performing a urinalysis, the urine indicated a urinary infection. It is suspected that the infection was acquired during the hospital stay. A sample was sent to the lab.
