- Some of the early pioneers of reggae music was The Wailers; a group co-founded by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.
- Other influential artists was Yellowman, Shabba Ranks and King Tubby, who was a sound engineer and not an artist.
- The Sugarhill Gang was one of the first American hip hop groups, known mostly for its 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight," the first rap single to become a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100

Influence on Hip Hop
- The tempo is much slower than ska and rocksteady and consists of offbeat rhythms.
- Dub was introduced to hip hop through reggae
- Kool Herc, Hip Hop's founder, was Jamaican and based his New York style on Jamaican sound systems.
- Reggae and politics were closely connected.
- At the One Love concert on April 22, 1978, Bob Marley joined hands with political rivals Michael Manley and Edward Seaga, in an effort for peace.
Drug Use
- Reggae artists used cannabis (i.e. marijuana) as a way to free their mind and soul
- Rastafarians saw the drug as a holy sacrament
- Artists such as Snoop Dogg or Snoop Lion have always promoted the use of marijuana
