The Effects

What were they trying to find?

The effects began to show immediately in the subjects. For example, the monkeys given cocaine suffered from severe convulsions, with some of the monkeys even tearing off their own fingers during halucinogenic trips. Those given amphetamines actually tore off fur from their arms and chest. The monkeys who were given a mix of cocaine and morphine only lived about two weeks.

Procedure

The monkeys exhibited such behavior because of the effect the drugs had on them. They became so addicted and dependent on the drugs that their behavior had changed and they had become violent. Some of the monkeys became so addicted that they were injecting themselves every hour with a drug.

Try to see how much of a dependency is caused by taking illicit drugs and what behavior subjects will exhibit in order to maintain their addiction.

The experimenters proceeded to get the subjects addicted to the various drugs. After the animals were addicted to the substances and taught how to inject in themselves, the scientists left the monkeys alone with ample supplies of the addictive substances.

The Result

  • The end result of the experiment was to understand the effects of addiction and drug use.
  • the role drugs have on our brain
  • the experiment ended up killing thousands of innocent monkeys due to their addictions to the drugs
  • monkeys don't understand the concept of overdosing so this is what many monkeys died from
  • this experiment was unethical in every way to torture animals but it goes to show how harmful drugs can be to our own lives and the mind

The Drugs Used

Analysis of Experiment

  • morphine
  • codeine
  • cocaine
  • amphetamines
  • alcohol

Becoming addicted to drugs can result in harming our lives mentally and physically and can very easily result in death. Also, that it doesn't take long to become addicted to drugs.

Conclusion

Men Behind The Experiment

From this experiment, it has showed me the effect drugs can have on the brain and how drugs can change a person psychologically and physically.

They provided the monkeys free access to a variety of drugs of abuse for investigating whether nonhuman primates would voluntarily initiate self-administration of these substances.

The Experiment

The Monkey Drug Trials was an experiment from 1969 that consisted of a large group of monkeys and rats that were trained to inject themselves with an assortment of drugs to study how one can become addicted to drugs.
