Refugees

  • In 1915, leaders of the Turkish government made a plan to remove and massacre Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire.
  • The international community convicted the genocide.

- In 1914-15, Belgian refugees arrived in France and the Netherlands in big numbers. Around 160,000 refugees found shelter in the UK, where the government watched them closely.

The Armenian Genocide was the horror committed against the Armenian people of the Ottoman Empire by the young Turkish government which held the power at the time.

  • Serbian refugees

- Serbia's defeat to Austrian forces led soldiers and civilians to leave, amounting to one third of the total pre-war population.

  • As the war got under way, other organizations started to help. Such as: -The National Catholic War Council -The Jewish Welfare Board -The Young Women's Christian Association
  • Russian refugees

- There were around 6 million refugees from the Russian Empire. Local authorities lost no time trying to evacuate refugees to other parts of the Empire.

  • Armenian refugees

- Armenians who managed to escape or survive the massacres carried out by the Turkish troops were scattered across the Middle East and Russia.

The refugee crisis had 2 main causes: the first was the occupation of enemies that influenced the people to flee along retreating troops. The second cause was the

state's use of force against it's own people- in other words, organized deportation.
