Thomas Hobbes

thanks for watching

HI!

Thesis

1588-1679

I, Thomas Hobbes, was essential to the enlightenment because I challenged people to think about basic human motivations, political power, and the laws of physics.

My Impact

This wonderful world would be much different if I was not here. People would not realize the hard truths about their inner self-centered conscience. They would go through life thinking that they were kind, moral beings at heart, when they are merely beasts that would turn on one another with no government to keep them in line.

My life

How I affected society

I was born on April 5th, 1588 in Westport, England.

I lived with my uncle, and attended Oxford University. I tutored the future Earl of Devonshire, William Cavendish. I met such great men as Galileo and Bacon, during my tours with the Cavendishes. My health was good for the rest of my life, and I played tennis at the age of 75.

I directly impacted society by tutoring a future important English monarch, Charles II. I also caused people to think about physics and basic human morals. My ideas directly affected the progress of the human race. Also, I entertained my servants with late night singing.

My Philosophies

I believe, rightly, first in the system of physics discovered by the great Galileo. It is the only explanation for what happens in the universe. I also believe, as I stated in my great work the leviathan, that all people need a strong ruler, or they will tear their society apart.
