Eyes

Throughout the entirety of act I Parris is disturbed by the reminiscing of what he had witnessed the girls doing in the forest one evening and longed for it to be kept confidential from the others or it would crush his ministry and his good name. He proclaims that he saw “someone naked running in the through the trees,” and is asking multiple questions to get Abigail to talk of the nonsense they were doing out in the forest but she forbids to say the truth of what really happened (Crucible 2). Samuel Parris acts in selfishness and wishes to keep what happened away from the people and gets assistance from Dr. Griggs who could not discover “no medicine for it in his books” and believe that Betty is unconscious due to witchcraft (1). Parris is distraught and knows that Abigail has not been completely honest with him because he saw Abigail and Betty dancing “like heathen[s],” the troubled reverend is having conflicts with himself and suspects that she has conjured spells and now that the crime has been committed, he will do anything in his power to keep the incident from reaching the Puritan community.

Head

As a reverend in the town of Salem, Samuel Parris feels that he needs to save the people from damnation's, although he is an ineffective preacher and is disliked amongst the people he feels no need to put his position in danger and wishes for the “abominations” (witchcraft) to not be conversed amongst the society but instead wishes for them to be diminish the talk on witchcraft (The Crucible 2). His authority within the puritan religion was used in a selfish and deceptive way, his philosophies are clarified when he states, “you people seem to not comprehend that a minister is the Lord’s man in the parish; a minister is not to be so lightly crossed and contradicted..” (8). By highlighting the authority Parris attains in the puritan society he wants the witch trials to come to an end because if other hear about the “unnatural causes” it would ruin the reputation of the christian community. In act I he is more concerned about keeping the predicament of the girls in clandestine so others will not be worried, but for the most part he wishes to protect himself and states “now my ministry's at stake; my ministry and perhaps your cousin's life,’ his choice of diction in that sentence is clarified, for he only seeks to obtain his reputation and position in the church (2).

Ears (Loren): Samuel Parris, and the way he is portrayed in the play The Crucible, sets the tone for the entire play. Parris held rigid to his Puritan beliefs and this led him take control of his congregation. Parris notices how his wife Elizabeth and his niece Abigail are brought into the victimization of the crime of witchcraft in the Salem village as well as how their words, to him are the strongest thing in this time of crisis, Parris takes everything they have to say into deep consideration and makes sure that what his niece and wife are saying, is the truth, nothing more, nothing less. “the Devil is out and preying on children like a beast upon the flesh of the pure lamb. God will bless you for your help.” (470) When Tituba tells Parris that the Devil bade her kill him, she is playing on his classic hubris, as he thinks he’s so important as minister that the forces of darkness would want to hurt him. By quoting the words of the Devil in saying that Parris is bad and mean, she also reveals the truth about what he’s like as a minister.

SAMUEL

Nose

(Loren): Born in 1653, Samuel Parris initially pursued a career as a merchant and planter in both London and Barbados. This previous career as a merchant and planter influenced Parris’ future career as a reverend in the Puritan church, as well as his education received before he became a merchant and planter Due to his previous career, the smells of the planting and the merchants spices would trigger some kind of past memory and cause Parris to remember his past actions. During Parris’ career as the minister of the Puritan church, as well as the Salem Witch Trials occurring around the same time, the smell of smoke of burning people convicted of witchcraft at the stake, would have some kind of effect on Parris, as he is the one in charge of this town's actions, mandating certain rules.

MOUTH-(Valeria)

Reverend Samuel Parris, a lying cheat accused of being undeniably greedy by John Proctor multiple times, Parris repeatedly expresses selfish behavior by lying to the court and denying that he did not see the naked girls lying in the woods and just as it seems he is standing up for his daughter in bed, he states “ I have fought three long years to bend these stiff-necked people to me-and now when some good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character,” his statement makes you realize that although his daughter is in this comma that is not what is important as she will compromise everything, reverend Parris is afraid that people will think their is witchcraft in his household in which will lead him to lose his position of minister of Salem. Amazing a song by Kanye west refers to Kanye as being an arrogant self-centered man just as reverend Samuel Parris expresses to be throughout his questioning over the girls in the forest and The Crucible.

WINGS

heart

Wings(Joey)- Samuel Parris is a man that will be taken to heaven under the law of God and will always be a man of the church. Reverend Parris obeys all acts and laws that the village has demanded of an honest and true man and “will abide by [Reverend Hale’s] judgment” when needed to save his life or another's (The Crucible 10). However; Parris will be judged for his actions, as he defies his niece to protect himself from the tragic fate that others faced under the grounds that God has placed upon the villagers. He cares for his image and how he plays a role in the community, and does not “wish to be put out like the cat, whenever some [the] majority feels [a] whim” as for the unusual event that has occurred in the village(8). Samuel Parris will be a local advocate to the church society and will try to protect himself in the long run to uphold his place as the reverend of the village.

Analyzing Samuel Parris in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it turns out that this reverend is not one people portray him as in which is said to be thoughtful and kind. Reverend Parris in this Scene emphasizes his character as a selfish man who is in love with himself and only cares about his reputation rather than others health, “Abigail, I have fought here three long years to bend these stiff-necked people to me, and now, just now when good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character”(I.63). In this scene, Parris is standing over Abigail in which it seems that he is feeling bad for her or is in pain, but in reality the reverend is worried about his reputation. He’s afraid that if the people of salem found out that there was witchcraft going on in his household, he will lose his position as minister of Salem. Moreover in the stanza Parris begs Abigail to tell him the truth about her use of Witchcraft because his reputation is in jeopardy, “I have given you a home child. I have put clothes upon your back-now give me an upright answer”(I.11). Emphasizing this Reverend Parris is speaking to Abigail, however, not about her health but he is attempting to persuade her into confessing for her actions. Samuel Parris throughout scene one emphasizes the love he has for himself and his selfish character that the scene exposes him from.

(Loren): Previous to the Ministers occupation in the church, he worked as a merchant and planter, this somehow elevated his status in business and anticipated his career as a minister. When Parris’ father passed away, he was forced to leave school, when he was attending Harvard, to work and continue his mercantile business. “Abigail, I have fought here three long years to bend these stiff-necked people to me, and now, just now when some good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character. I have given you a home, child. I have put clothes upon your back—now give me an upright answer. Your name in the town—it is entirely white, is it not?” (63)Here Parris discusses the amount of work he has put into the church and how Abigail can merely throw it all away in the blink of an eye, all because she does not want to own up to her mistakes of performing witchcraft to gain revenge against the family who fired her from being her maid.

Samuel Parris in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, portrays a selfish cold hearted character who only cares about himself and his needs. However, in scene I of the play, the story reveals the characters, pain and imperfections in which he fears and hides, “And I pray you feel the weight of truth upon you, for now my ministry's at stake, my ministry and perhaps your cousin’s life”(I.10). Emphasizing his words spoken to Abigail, Parris reveals that he is afraid he is going to lose his ministry position and will be given a bad reputation maybe even executed. Moreover, with this being enhanced, Reverend Parris attempts to hide Abigail's situation to save his position as minister of Salem. Backtracking to the beginning of the scene, Parris is struck by great pain and hurt when he finds out the Abigail has been doing witchcraft since it has put his ministry at sake, “No-no. There be no unnatural cause here”(I.9). Analyzing this stanza, Parris is shocked by the fact that Abigail was practicing witchcraft, it brings great pain to him because he knows if it is true there is a likely chance he will lose his position.

Hands- (Valeria)

As accused by John Proctor of being greedy, “tonight when i open my door to leave my house- a dagger clattered to the ground,” rev. Parris is a paranoid man as he believes everyone is out to attack him , he allows no control and does not correct the puritans on their sinful ways but judges them, he is a defensive man when people start questioning anything about him and his life and does not strongly obtain the ability to sympathize with people or their inferiorities (53).

LEGS

Legs(Joey)- Samuel Parris is a generous and warm hearted man that desires to welcome everyone to his home and invites all to “come in” as he has no secrets to hide(The Crucible 2). He admires all the townspeople for being so involved with the puritan culture and for those that defied the religion believes that “there is a party in this church, I am not blind; there is a faction and a party” that must stop at once(9). Being reverend is a major occupation to have in his village because people will confess all of their secrets to Reverend Parris and he shall know what is going on behind closed doors. He believes though, that he can handle all the stress of being a man of God as he must uphold a higher standard to be one and that he gives all that he is to the Lord. Samuel Parris cares for all of his people, and asks them, “how does you[r] child ail?” when he tries to figure out the issue of witchcraft in the woods(3). He appreciates being a reverend for his fellow citizens and would never exchange it for something else.

FEET

Feet(Joey)- Samuel Parris says that “no-no. There be no unnatural causes here” (The Crucible 1) as he hides the truth that his niece Abigail Williams has done witchcraft in the woods and involved his daughter Betty , that is unconsious in the first act, and Parris now has to save himself, from destroying his ministry. It was of the time during the Salem witch trials and people were afraid of unordinary acts, that led away from the religious movement that they placed on the colony. Parris will not let Abigail be the one to end his good name and tries to protect her, but more for himself and spoke to individuals in hush tones that “it is not for [them] to say what is good for [them] to hear!”(8). Even though Reverend Parris feels guilty for going against the church and lying to fellow friends; however; Mr. Putman convinces Parris to spread lies to the townspeople as “[he will] strike out against the Devil and the village will bless [him] for it!” by death as it is permitted. Samuel Parris will later in the play generate other people to point fingers at others and create a puzzle game that led to a trail for the 10 girls and Mr. Proctor. Parris will no longer be the issue in the play as he thought only for himself and create problems for other individuals that were hanged for wrongful actions, as the townspeople were innocent.
