WAVW AT LI

They believe that there have been at least three known tsunami's in Lituya Bay between 1884 - 85, 1936, and in 1854

In 1853 - 54 was the first recorded ....there is evidence ...

this photo (taken in 1952) is a cross section of a Spruce Tree showing the waves damage ... this tree was growing just above the timeline of a giant wave ...

NOTE: There are 100 growth rings outside the injury on the right....

Evidence of this giant wave (about 75 feet high) is in Nature's scars.

Again in 1936...

What can cause this to happen?

There were eyewitnesses this time...Mr. Larsen & F.H. Frederickson were on the 38' trolling boat "The MINE"...according to Frederickson the weather was clear ... about 6:20am a loud, steady roar was heard and about 30 minutes later they saw the first Wave a wall of water about 100' High. coming at them.

What caused this wave is unknown.

The cause of this giant wave was a the sudden breaking of an ice-dammed body of water. They believe that there was an very large pond or pooling of water with-in the N. Crillon Glacier
