  • When Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, was elected president he had appointed a governor-general, Francis Burton Harrison, who worked closely with the nationalists, who granted the Philippine Assembly more executive power.

  • America was looking to grow as an empire, so they needed more land. There had been a debate on annexing the Philippines, those who agreed to it figured that there was a great opportunity. Those who opposed thought that the annexation was not the american way to force their will over others.

Conquest

  • When Spain and the united states signed the treaty to end the Spanish-American war on December 10,1898- the two countries agreed that America would possess the Philippines in exchange for $20 million dollars. The people of the Philippines were left out of the consultation, and thus one foreign occupier was replaced by another.
  • Although the Americans believed the proposed Philippine government under president Emilio Aguinaldo would not be strong enough to order. The Philippines then began a war with America in 1899 , which lasted until 1902 after the president was captured.

Resistance

  • Filipino feeling towards domination of their country by USA was not very different from their feeling towards the Spanish rule, they were strongly opposed to both.
  • The relations between USA and the Filipino remained tense for few months following transfer, and finally in February 1899 a bloody and disastrous war broke out between them, the Philippine-American War, 1899–1902.. In this war nearly one sixth of population of Philippines including women and children perished. Philippines were not able to march the superior military and economic power of the USA and Emilio Aguinaldo was forced to surrender in 1901.
