Spatial Order & Descriptive Language

Spatial order: a means of organizing writing to effectively guide

the reader through detailed language. This language

and structure will make it seem as though the

reader is looking at the image described rather than

reading about it.

What are some ways to approach spatial order?

Essentially, you want to draw a picture through a careful choice of words to create a detailed, organized image for your reader to imagine!

  • Near to Far

  • Side to Side

  • Top to Bottom

  • Front to Back

Concrete vs Abstract

Descriptors

Concrete descriptions are based on input from the senses.

Abstract descriptors are based on ideas or concepts rather than tangible evidence.

Descriptive language is often

based on sensory input

Adverbs and adjectives are key here!

Try asking the following questions for detail:

What you see, taste, touch, smell,

and hear are concrete descriptions.

Some examples include love, freedom,

goodness, morality, and most ___-isms.

(example: feminism or communism)

Adjective

Adverb
