Horizon Line

Vanishing Point

One-Point Perspective

The earliest art typically sized many objects or characters hierarchically according to their spiritual or thematic importance not their distance from the viewer and did not use foreshortening.

European Medieval artists were aware of the general principle of varying the relative size of elements according to distance but even more than classical art was perfectly ready to override it for the other reasons.

Sophistication increased stedily during this period. Giotto's work was a step in the right direction.

Some of the paintings found in the ruins of Pompeii show a remarkable realism and perspective for their time; before complex systems of mathematics came into play in the Renaissance.

By the Renaissance, artists were teaming up with mathematicians and engineers to design a formal system of perspective from a realistic angle.

At this time, artists were not simply masters of ONE craft but masters of science, math and engineering as well as philosophy, theology and all forms of art.

(PART 2 ) ACTIVITY !!!!!!!!

  • Draw a horizon line and 2 vanishing points in your sketchbook.

  • Explore the various possibilities of creating at least 5 cubes in 3D using the two-point perspective rule.

Multi - Point Perspective

Two - Point Perspective

Vanishing Point

Multi-View Perspective

Contains 3+ vanishing points on the horizon line.

Contains two vanishing points on the horizon line.

One- Point Perspective

A vanishing point is a point in the picture plane that projected lines viewed in perspective appear to converge.

"Corner" faces the viewer to show two planes

Areas facing viewer depend on the multi vanishing points

(PART 3) ACTIVITY !!!!!!!!

  • Draw a horizon line and 3+ vanishing points in your sketchbook.

  • Explore the various possibilities of creating at least 3 cubes in 3D using the multi-point perspective rule.

Projected lines converge at BOTH of the vanishing points

Projected lines converge at two of the vanishing points

Contains only one vanishing point on the horizon line.

Let's See

Bird's Eye View vs. Worm's Eye View

(PART 1 ) ACTIVITY !!!!!!!!

Bird's eye view: above

Worm's eye view: Below

  • Draw a horizon line and 1 vanishing point in your sketchbook.

  • Explore the various possibilities of creating at least 5 cubes in 3D using the one-point perspective rule.

In terms of the figure, foreshortening will allow for your drawing to look both realistic and surrealistic...sometimes at the same time.

Foreshortening: method of rendering a specific object/figure in an image in depth with distortion as seen by the eye due to extreme or unusual angles.

Approximate representation of what is seen by the eye in order to show the illusion of depth or distance.

10 MINS

The horizon line in perspective drawing is a horizontal line across the picture, at eye level.

Its placement determines where we seem to be looking from

- a high place, or from close to the ground.

The surface plane is always facing the viewer.

Where the projected lines meets that

helps to construct a drawing.

10 MINS

Objects appear smaller when the distance

from the observer increases.
